Joe Harriott Quintet - January 27th, 1961 Thanks are due to Graham Wood for his detailed help in preparing these two Joe Harriott discographical pages. He had very positive ideas. He knew exactly what he wanted - always!. If you wanted to befriend him, rang him up, he was never there, either at the pub getting drunk or in the betting shop - he was an intense gambler too. Playing, having a woman, having a drink - if that's having the main things in life, he'd got them. No one stayed for long, but there was no shortage of replacements. Perhaps that was why he was so attractive to women. In his playing he really got through to people - there was such a cry for love in his sound. Once he'd got an idea it was like tunnel vision, reason meant nothing to him.

You could just not argue with him, hardly hold a rational conversation with him. Joe did everything with fantastic intensity, didn't do anything in moderation. Phil Seamen was a problem, sometimes you couldn't imagine he'd last another day. When Pat Smythe wanted to leave we told him it was his duty to keep going. He seemed not to know who his friend were. He was an orphan and he had almost no schooling, and it left him bitter.

Probably went right back to his beginnings. everything he did was self destructive - everything. I always felt Joe had a sort of death-wish, in a way. In an interview for Kitty Grime's book Jazz at Ronnie Scott's he gave a very good analysis of Joe's music and an interesting look at what made Joe tick. A brief biography and a discography from 1954 to 1960 are available on another page.ĭouble bass player Coleridge Goode knew Joe better than most, playing in Harriott's quintet from start to finish and in other groups with him throughout the 1960s.
